We believe that most psychological disturbances originate from decreased functioning in one’s ability to regulate the emotional experience; therefore, there becomes a need to understand the factors that contribute to this loss in emotional regulation and to target what is necessary for transformational change and healing. Reaching therapeutic goals usually involves a process of collaboration between the therapist and the client. As such, we carefully assess and seek to understand the events, emotional experiences, genetic factors and beliefs of our clients that contributed to how they have learned to function and we use the therapeutic methods we believe will be most effective to restore healthy functioning. Treatment can involve techniques to target learning alternative adaptive thinking responses, learning to accept and trust one’s own emotional experience, increasing awareness, learning new skills, or identifying new ways to solve problems. In any case, our approach involves considering each client as unique and designing an individualized treatment plan.
